What is T-Sum 200?

We use the T-Sum method to determine when to apply nutrients to our hay fields.  On our farm T-Sum is generally reached around the middle of February.

T-Sum is a method that can assist in the timing of initial fertilization when grass comes out of its winter dormancy period and needs its building nutrients for the long growing season ahead.

The T-Sum 200 value is the accumulated mean daily temperatures (in °C) above zero, starting on January 1.  Below zero temperatures are considered a 0.  Example: If the mean daily temperatures for a 5-day period were 6, 3, 0, 1, and -4°C, the T-Sum total is 10.

It is important to have the proper nutrients available at this time so plants have a stronger foundation and a better beginning to the season for optimal growth and vigor throughout the season.

We have found other plants and trees come out of dormancy at T-Sum 200 on our farm.  Trees, roses and other garden plants all begin to bud and green up.  It’s a sure sign spring is here!
